So this is Meggin's (my little sister) baby...Sophie. Sophie was born a couple of weeks ago happy and healthy...and then she caught the yucky cold that is going around the world. She started it on Monday, but was still eating well, etc. By Saturday night Megs called me and told me that she had quit breathing. Meg had run up to put Olivia to bed, came down and found her blue and choking. So she got her breathing again, but was worried because she seemed to choke and not breath and wasn't necessarily doing well. I told her to take her in if for no other reason than she is only 2 weeks old. So she took her to the ER who ran a bunch of tests, told her she over-reacted, and sent her home. By Monday morning she was back at the doctor...still not breathing great all of the time, wouldn't eat, seemed lethargic. They too ran the usual tests and sent her home. Meg had been crying off and on since Saturday worried sick about her little baby that no one would help. Monday was long and hard. She wouldn't eat. She just laid there with her eyes kind of half open. She would breath a bit and then stop a bit. But the doctors all said her oxygen was fine. She was fine. She just had a cold. This morning, after a long night, Sophie's temp started dropping. They couldn't get her warm and then, of course, she stopped breathing again. So they called 911 who came and took her to the ER. Poor baby almost lost her life because no one would believe that she was sick. And poor Mommy was going out of her mind trying to get someone to help her. She is now at Primary Children's (with doctors who are a little more competent). She is tubed in about every place you can imagine and sedated so she won't rip everything up, but stable and finally getting the help that she needs. Meg texted me earlier today and said, "She is good. They told me she wouldn't die and that's all that matters to me right now." She has at least a 2 day stay in the PICU and then 2 more in a regular room if she does well enough and then they'll gauge from there. Pray for baby Sophie..her and Meg have had a long lonely fight the past couple of days.

Oh my goodness!!! My prayers are definitely with Meggin and Sophie. I hope they both recover quickly!!
Scary. I too, will pray for baby Sophie and Meggin. How sad when the mom knows that something is wrong and the doctors will do NOTHING! I would think that not breathing continually is reason enough to be taken very serious. Has it been decided if it is more than 'just a cold'?
I'm so sorry for Meggin! Having those tiny ones sick is so nerve rattling anyway, but to have the docs do nothing is infuriating!
How scary for them. Hope everything keeps going better for them.
Stories like this infuriate me! Medicine is a tricky thing and granted there are times where it is impossible to diagnosis things correctly, but hello, a two week old who is having breathing issues is not something to be taken lightly! Those babies have very little room for error. It seems to me that Megan's concerns should have been taken way more seriously and investigated way more thoroughly than they were! Breathing is a pretty important thing, and problems with it could be caused by soooooo many things!! I guess I don't know all the details and maybe shouldn't be so opinionated, but I hate to see little ones suffer. I feel so bad that Megan and Sophie had to go through all of that when much of it possibly could have been avoided. How terrifying! They will be in my prayers, and send them well wishes from me too!
When this is all over, it may be a good thing for Megan to write a letter to the ER and her family doctor. Not a mean letter or anything, just one that explains what happened, the diagnosis that was missed, and the result. I don't know if anything was out of order or outrightly missed in those first two visits- it's too hard to tell when you're not there, but if something was, the ER and her doctor should know so it doesn't happen again! These kinds of letters can be a big help in improving service and focusing teaching for the medical professionals.
Please keep us informed on little Sophie's progress. What a good sis you are JD!
